Tech Review: Gmail

With all the buzz surrounding Gmail and me needing a new email since my previously held Yahoo account was hacked, I had to test this webmail from the almighty Google. So I've been using Gmail for over two months now, it's time to draw some conclusions.

There are so many positive points about Gmail that I don't know where to begin. Ok let's start with the most obvious: it's size. With over 2.6 Gb (& counting) of free space, Gmail totally destroys the competition. It's simple, no need for annoying mail client (Outlook) or to delete any messages since the space is not a problem any more. It's really easy to send big files, music or even short movies over the net now! The other major innovation is the interface. Minimalist and simple to use, the interface reflects Google’s search engine. With a capacity of over 300’000 emails, it would have been chaotic to search for an old message. Enters here a powerful internal search engine, fast and convenient that will help you find anything you want.

I also like the anti-spam service; unlike other email (Yahoo, Hotmail) it works extremely good and filtered every single spam message so far. The conversation utility is pretty sweet too, it allows you to follow emails that you have send and receive from a same subject much like an Instant Messaging client would. It’s kinda weird at first but very useful when we get the handle of it. There is plenty of other little tools here and there and I’ll let you discover them by yourself.

Concerning the negative points, I heard people complaining about text ads reflecting the content of their mail and that it was invading their privacy. I don’t know ‘cuz I haven’t seen any of these ads yet, wait and see on this topic. To nitpick a little bit I would add that Gmail needs an anti-virus, a blacklisting function and a translation tool (like on the Google toolbar). But like we said it’s not the final version yet.

Gmail is still in Beta testing. It is impossible to obtain an account without receiving an invitation. The good thing is, I just happen to have myself a hundred invitations left. For those of you that want to receive an invitation, leave a (nice) comment with your email and if I feel like you deserve one, I'll send you an invitation.

Paris:
How could we talk about fashion without starting with Paris? Prestigious Dior, Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier or Chanel on Faubourg St Honoré; Guess, Lacoste, Von Dutch, Hermes, Kaporal, or Eden Park at Galerie Lafayette, a trip to Paris always include many eye candies. Here the trend changes every month and it's always a race to be on top.

Milan:
Milan, Italy. Birthplace of so many great haute-couture brands. There is nothing to say except that you will always look great in any of the following. Pick and choose: Dolce Gabbana, Gucci, Gianfranco Ferré, Guru, Emporio Armani, Diesel, Prada, Fendi, Valentino, Versace, Moschino...

New York:
New York the metropolitan has always been a crossroads for many style. Whether it's classic (Gap, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger) Street & Urban (Roc-A-Wear, Marck Ecko, Fubu, Sean John) or trendy (Playboy, Hugo Boss, Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan) the fashion from the Big Apple represents the metro-sexual lifestyle with grace.

Tokyo:
Tokyo's fashion represents the most provocative and the most avant-gardiste styles of the industry. Japanese teenagers are not afraid to wear and to mix every kind of different style bringing new trends such as gothic lolita, superpositions or the loose socks with the school uniform. The predominance of cartoony, influences is also very visible, changing every fashionista into a manga character. Few brands have actually been exploding worldwide except Evisu Denim.

Barcelona:
A mix of the classic Italian lines and the colorful Latin American styles, Barcelona proudly represents Zara, Massimo Dutti, Custo Barcelona, or the very controversial De Puta Madre.

London:
Among the very classic and very classy Burberry or Paul Smith, new brands like FCUK, Le Temps des Cerises/Japan Rags, and Pepe Jeans have been invading the upscale youth market. A favorite for the clubbers, the trashy style of London has been a trendsetter for many designers.

Hong Kong:
I don't know much about the fashion scene in Hong Kong or any of their designers but a couple of my girlfriends went their for their vacation and told me that it was just crazy. The clothes that they brought back are just beautiful. If any of you has more information, please submit it to me!

Rio de Janeiro:
Representing the Latino world, fashion from Rio de Janeiro offers a clothing style always sexy and colorful. Rio de Janeiro, with it's army of plastic surgeons, has become the temple for the God Appearances and its fashion industry is growing increasingly especially with their ever popular Brazilian bath-suits and flip flops.
